Hunter education instructor training set

Volunteer training courses to be held in St. Tammany Parish
, LDWF says

Training for volunteer hunter education instructors has been set for June 28-29 at the St. Tammany Sheriff’s Office Training and Educational Facility, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries announced.

The free course includes a session from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and eight hours of instruction (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) on Saturday, the LDWF said.

The training facility is at 39395 Pine Street in Pearl River.

Participation in both days’ classes is mandatory; successful completion of this course will certify attendees as instructors for LDWF hunter education courses, the news release said.

The course is open to anyone older than 18.

Topics include safe gun handling, wildlife management, responsibility and ethics, and general outdoor safety. Live-fire exercises will be part of the training.

According to the LDWF, requirements for becoming a hunter education instructor are:

• Attend the 12-hour instructor training course
• Complete a live fire exercise
• Pass a written exam
• Undergo a criminal background check

Characteristics of a volunteer instructor, as defined by the LDWF, are:

• Firearm safety experience
• Courteous and respectful demeanor
• Good communications skills
• Someone who believes in the importance of education
