Animal Planet Highlights the Atchafalaya

Animal Planet (Discovery Communications) aired two episodes of Swamplands USA on July 9 that some of you may have seen. The first hour featured a documentary on the Okefenokee Swamp which straddles the Georgia- Florida border while the second hour covered the Louisiana Atchafalaya Swamp. For those who missed it the first time, the Atchafalaya documentary will be rebroadcast on July 30 and July 31.

Swamplands USA Summary: The Atchafalaya Swamp is an immense floodplain in the heart of Louisiana. Flooded forests dissected by tranquil waterways give refuge to an astonishing array of wildlife, including alligators, river shrimp and an array of secretive amphibians. http://animal.discovery.com/tv-shows/tv-schedule.htm

Atchafalaya National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1984. Its 15,000 acres are part of the largest bottomland hardwood swamp in the country. This beautiful swampland offers a multitude of recreational options. Hunting, fishing, hiking and some of the best wildlife viewing opportunities in the country exist in the Atchafalaya Basin. The refuge is managed cooperatively with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Sherburne Wildlife Management Area and the US Army Corps of Engineers Atchafalaya Spillway Water Diversion Project
