Local and state officials hold ribbon-cutting in St. Martin Parish

Thursday, June 5, 2014

The Jim Trewin Park Boat Launch at Bayou Amy in Henderson was the site of a ribbon-cutting ceremony held recently.

The event marked the opening of another water access project built with funding from the state Department of Natural Resources’ Atchafalaya Basin Program. Boaters utilizing the launch can start at the Jim Trewin Park and travel along the western guide levee of the Atchafalaya Basin, all the way south to Lake Fausse Point.

Both St. Martin Parish President Guy Cormier and Town of Henderson Mayor Sherbin Collette talked about the beauty of the basin, how its resources can be shared by all that wish to be a part of it, and the importance of providing access to one of the state’s best assets for bass, catfish, or sac-au-lait fishing.

Atchafalaya Basin Program Director Don Haydel said the launch was constructed along with a floating dock, parking area, picnic pavilion and restrooms at a total cost of $561,321, of which the state’s share was $260,000.  The ten acre location was provided by the St. Martin Land Company.  Coastal Impact Assistance Program (CIAP) dollars and local participation provided  the balance of the funding.

DNR Secretary Stephen Chustz noted, “For the many residents of the basin region and for all those that visit, our goals are being realized as more and more people can come out and enjoy the Atchafalaya – there’s no place like it on earth.”
