Family Fish fest slated for Saturday in Baton Rouge, four events set for Sunday around state, LDWF says
National Hunting and Fishing Day celebrations are set for this weekend, and include a Family Fish Fest at Waddill Outdoor Education Center in Baton Rouge on Sept. 27 followed by four events to be held around the state on Sept. 28, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said.
All events are free and open to the public, the LDWF said.
The Family Fish Fest will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, and is open to youth age 15 and under at the Baton Rouge location.
Each of the first 50 registrants will receive a complimentary rod and reel, courtesy of Pure Fishing, and each of the first 100 registrants will receive a fishing goodie bag. Every registrant will automatically be entered into numerous prize drawings.
In addition, adults will receive one raffle ticket for each youth they enter into the Family Fish Fest for the chance to win great prizes. All anglers are asked to bring their own fishing equipment and bait.
On Sunday, free National Hunting and Fishing Day events will be held in Monroe, Baton Rouge, Minden and Woodworth. More than 10,000 people annually participate in activities designed to celebrate the outdoors sports.
Although specific activities vary at each location, every event will feature shooting ranges, fishing ponds and boating activities, as well as wildlife interactions. There also will be exhibits on LDWF management programs, shooting and fishing demonstrations; and exhibits from local chapters of Ducks Unlimited, Safari Club, CCA and with supporting businesses from the local communities. Attendees have the chance to try their skills at the.
Youth and Boy Scout participants at the Baton Rouge and Woodworth locations also can obtain and complete an activity book to receive a Hunting and Fishing Day patch (Scouts only). The booklet includes numerous activities that include casting, fish ID, canoeing, fish tagging and archery. “Our goal to is get people outdoors to enjoy the activities we offer and, hopefully, send them home with a renewed interest and appreciation for Louisiana’s natural resources,” LDWF Secretary Robert Barham said. “The National Hunting and Fishing Day experience is designed to stimulate greater interest in experiencing and preserving the treasures we have here in Sportsman’s Paradise.”
National Hunting and Fishing Day is a national event celebrated by all 50 states on the fourth Saturday in September. It was created in 1972 when Congress passed two bills establishing a specific day to celebrate the conservation contributions of our nation’s hunters and anglers.
