Variety of art, activities on tap for Art on the Bayou

This spray can art created by local artist Randy LaPrairie will hang at the Bayou Plaquemine Waterfront Park to draw attention to the Art on the Bayou event on May 30. It's a 6 feet X 9 feet rendering of the famous Mona Lisa painting by Leonardo de Vinci on a canvas drop cloth. LaPrairie will also give a demonstration of spray can art at 1 p.m.

A wide variety of art forms will be on display and for sale, along with demonstrations and seminars, at Art on the Bayou on Saturday, May 30, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Bayou Plaquemine Waterfront Park, 57845 Foundry Street, Plaquemine.

Unique activities of the art festival include a demonstration on making sleeping mats by crocheting plastic grocery bags (10 a.m. – 2 p.m.) as part of the Plaquemine Litter Abatement Program; a writer’s talk on how to get a book published by local author and artist Ruth Williams (11 a.m. –noon); and a demonstration on spray painting art on canvas by noted painter Randy LaPrairie (1 – 2 p.m.).

Those attending can also place bids in the silent auction of art donated by local artists, and children can enjoy chalk on the walk, both from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Music will be provided by Abby Johnson and Spectrum and Tracey Brown.

More than 25 booths with a wide variety of arts will be available for purchase by area artists, including the works of renowned folk artist Alvin Battiste, and paintings by Randy LaPrairie. The arts will include crochet, jewelry, hand-made doll clothes, wood spinning, carvings, and sculptures, collage/greeting card designs, quilts, fiber arts, stained glass, homemade jams, jellies and pastries, wall décor, frames, wreaths, taxidermy, soaps, needlepoint, and more.
