MORGANZA - Debris along the levees near the Morganza Spillway are a welcome sight for people in the area. They're the first sign flood waters are coming down.

On the other hand, the only sight near the Old River neighborhood are rooftops and floating camps.

One resident told News 2 the water was 8 inches away from his home. When it's dry, the home stands 18 feet above the ground.

"2011 was a little higher," Keith Major said. "But good thing it stopped when it did."

The May 2011 flood swamped Major's camp. This year, he doesn't think any remodeling will have to be done.

This comes two weeks after the Army Corps of Engineers announced that it wasn't necessary to open up the Morganza Spillway in order to divert water from the swollen Mississippi River. Further downriver the Corps did open 210 bays of the Bonnet Carre Spillway, but began closing them Monday.
