Ground Water Glossary

Alluvial Aquifer:
A water-bearing deposit of unconsolidated material (sand and gravel) left behind by a river or other flowing water.
Aquifer:
A water bearing stratum of permeable rock, sand, or gravel.
Artesian Aquifer:
An aquifer where the water is under sufficient head (pressure) to cause it to rise above the zone of saturation if the opportunity were afforded for it to do so.
Ground Water:
Water that is found underground in the cracks and spaces in soil, sand and rock.
Hydrologic Cycle (Water Cycle):
The cycle of water movement from the atmosphere to the earth and back to the atmosphere through various processes. These processes include: precipitation, infiltration, percolation, storage, evaporation, transpiration and condensation.
Hydrology:
The science dealing with the properties, distribution and circulation of water.
Water Table:
The upper surface of a zone of saturation; the upper surface of the ground water.
