Barataria Bay Waterway Wetland Restoration

State Project Number: BA-19
Project Priority List (PPL): 01
Federal Sponsor: United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE)
Project Type: Marsh Creation
Construction Completion Date: 1996

Description:

This project was authorized to create marsh in shallow water areas adjacent to the Barataria Bay Waterway. However, oyster leases prohibited the use of the dredged material at all of the marsh creation sites. As an alternative, approximately 9 acres of vegetated wetlands were created adjacent to the state-funded Queen Bess project by constructing a rock dike and filling the containment area with dredged material from the Barataria Bay Waterway.
