Houma Marinas named to State Clean Marina Listing

Monday, June 30, 2014

BATON ROUGE- Three marinas, all located in Terrebonne parish, have been awarded “Clean Marina” designation this month under a program administered by the La. Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

The state’s Clean Marina Program is managed by the DNR Office of Coastal Management, which certifies marina businesses that meet best management practices set forth in the program’s guidelines. The total number of recognized marinas in the program stands at eighteen this year. Seven of those are in Terrebonne parish and four are in the City of Houma.

Receiving state certificates in June were Texas Gulf Road Marina, Ashland Marina, and South Houma Marina. These marinas also become part of a national register of marinas and facility owners that provide attractive, environmentally responsible facilities for the boating public and exceptional services for clients.

“The marina operators have true Louisiana pride because their accommodations not only shine but more importantly, they are committed to practices that will reduce pollution and protect our coastal waters,” DNR Secretary Chustz said.

Along with public recognition and certification, Clean Marinas are entitled to a special flag to fly on their property.

Terrebonne Parish President Michel Claudet and Nicholas Matherne, Director of the Terrebonne Office of Coastal Restoration and Preservation are supporters of the marina program as well as administrators for the local coastal zone management plan.

President Claudet remarked, “As the Saltwater Fishing Capital of the World,™ we’re very proud to offer fishermen more certified Clean Marinas than any other parish in Louisiana.  We’re committed to increasing the quantity and quality of marinas in the program so that visitors to our parish and our local residents can fully enjoy the recreational and commercial fishing resources that ‘The Good Earth’ has to offer in Terrebonne Parish.”
