DNR Secretary names Frugé as Basin Program Interim Director

Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Secretary Scott Angelle has selected Dave Frugé to serve as interim Director for the department’s Atchafalaya Basin Program (ABP). Frugé will retain his current title and duties as DNR Office of Coastal Restoration and Management Deputy Assistant Secretary, while he oversees the managerial functions of the program.

The ABP was established in 1998 by state law to work with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and other entities for the federally sponsored Atchafalaya Basin Floodway System, Louisiana Project.

According to Secretary Angelle, Frugé’s combined knowledge and experience in coastal matters and other natural resources issues make him the best choice for administering the program at this time. He has worked with the coastal master plan, coordinated the Louisiana Coastal Impact Assistance Plan, and has had nearly three decades of involvement with Atchafalaya Basin conservation, restoration and flood control issues during his career with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.  He has interacted extensively with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, other federal and state agencies, non-government organizations, oil companies, and landowners on plans, projects and permit requests involving the Atchafalaya Basin.  He also represented the U.S. Department of the Interior on the Louisiana Coastal Wetlands Conservation and Restoration Task Force for over 8 years.

Former ABP Director Sandra Thompson retired August 3, 2007. Assistant ABP Director Robert Benoit continues to serve the program along with clerical support staff. For additional contact information on the program online, go to www.dnr.louisiana.gov.
