Where can I find information on the
State Building Energy Code ?

What is the current state building energy code?
    A. Residential: 1 & 2-family - 2006 IRC
      Multi-family over 3 stories - ASHRAE 90.1-2004
      Multi-family 3 stories or less - IECC 2006
    B. Commercial: ASHRAE 90.1-2004

How do I comply with the building energy code?
You can use the software, COMcheck or REScheck, which can be downloaded from http://www.energycodes.gov Be sure to 1st select the proper code prior to entering any information.

How do I get a copy of COMcheck or REScheck?
    Download from http://www.energycodes.gov.

How do I get the forms mentioned in the letter that I received from the Fire Marshal?
The completed forms can be printed by COMcheck or REScheck after all required information has been entered..  To print the forms, click File then select View/Print Reports.  Make sure that all forms are printed.

Does Louisiana have a statewide building code?
Yes, Louisiana State Uniform Construction code applies to all one- and two-family residential buildings.  However, for commercial buildings and multi-family residential buildings, several codes standards and acts are in place.

How do I show compliance with the Commercial Building Energy Conservation Code?
The easiest and most common way to document compliance is by using COMcheck.  COMcheck is a software tool developed by the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.  The software is available for free on www.energycodes.gov.  However, COMcheck is unable to test buildings based on the Building Performance approach.  For Building Performance or Energy Budget approaches, more sophisticated software such as DOE-2, which must be purchased, can be used.

How do I choose the correct code when using COMcheck and REScheck?
With the program open, locate Code on the toolbar within the program.  When you click “Code” a dropdown list will appear.  Click on the correct code.  If the code was changed corrected, the correct code should appear in the middle of the blue bar at the top of the program.

What is the difference between cavity insulation and continuous insulation?
Cavity insulation is insulation that is located between structural members (i.e. studs, joists, etc).  The insulation is thus separated by materials with a lower thermal resistance (R value).  Continuous insulation is not separated by any members or equipment.  For example, a wall construction, there is insulation filling the cavity between the studs.  This insulation is considered cavity insulation.  In homes where rigid insulation is used on the exterior of the wall, the rigid insulation board is considered continuous insulation.
