Ask your realtor
if they know of any Energy Star or HERO homes on the market. In the
past 8 years, over 10,000 Energy Star homes have been built in Louisiana.
Some Home Energy Rebate Option (HERO) participating homes might qualify
for the Energy Star label too. Sometimes the required changes are
too costly for a home to meet the standard of an Energy Star new home,
but can be a successfully renovated participant, worthy of a $2,000
rebate. Those homes achieved a minimum 30% improvement in their energy
efficiency. Such homes may have been as much as 100 years old but
have become significantly more energy efficient than their neighboring
homes of the same size and age. Over 5,000 HERO homes have been renovated
to meet the minimum 30% improvement, but the
average improvement for these homes is 86%!
To obtain the label
which will be placed on the breaker box, the finished house will
have to be extensively tested by the Energy Rater. Although new
custom built homes do not qualify for the HERO program, and the
new International Residential Code that governs new home construction
after January 2007, will cause a major improvement in the energy
performance of all new homes, hire a Certified Energy Rater to perform
an Energy Rating on your plans prior to construction to obtain recommendations
to make the home achieve the performance of an Energy Star home.
Then verify it after completion, to locate most hidden defects while
establishing that the home is indeed worthy of the Energy Star label.
Should the rater find that the home is worthy, he will submit the
home to DNR for placement on their Energy Star database. See the
Home Energy Rebate Option Program
(HERO) to get the name of Certified Energy Raters in your region.
