Gordon Soderberg
BioLiberty,
LLC
Part owner of Bio Liberty, LLC, a biodiesel producing company,
along with his partner, Kevin Curley DDS. Located on a 28-acre parcel in Slidell,
Louisiana, Bio Liberty specializes in
producing biodiesel from used vegetable oil to be utilized in off-road
vehicles, as well as training veterans to make biodiesel in coordination with
Bio Liberty. Gordon is a veteran of the
U.S. Navy and served as a seaman, corpsman, and surgical technician during his
tenure from 1982-1989. Gordon is also a
videographer, webmaster, and artist.
Gordon came to New
Orleans on September
1, 2005, (two days after Hurricane Katrina) from Crawford,
Texas, where he was engaging in peace
activist work with Cindy Sheehan. When It became clear that Hurricane Katrina was going to be a
devastating disaster, he and a handful of other medically trained veterans
loaded their Veterans for Peace Tour Bus with supplies and headed to New
Orleans. They used the media attention they got from
their peace activism to call attention to the effects of the war on the relief
efforts on the Gulf Coast
by producing videos, a website, and artist renderings. Michael Moore reposted their videos and blogs on his website, and within three weeks, they had
raised over $500,000 which was used to set up volunteer camps and fund other
grassroots organizations working on direct aid along the Gulf
Coast from Mississippi
to New Orleans. By combining his technological skills and
veteran interests, Gordon has since created Bio Liberty, and its website,
www.bioliberty.net, as a conduit to provide sustainable jobs to veterans as it
relates to the reconstruction of the Gulf South.
