Clean Cities
Clean Cities is a voluntary U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) program to
encourage the use of alternatives to gasoline and diesel fuels, reduce
the nation's dependence on foreign petroleum, and improve the local air
quality.
The Clean Cities Program is between the State Energy Office, local government,
fleets, and other agencies and is working to promote and encourage the
compliance with the Energy Policy Act (EPACT).
The overall goal of the program is to facilitate the achievement of primary
objectives established by EPACT and the Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA).
More specifically, the program is intended to:
- Facilitate alternative fuel vehicle production &
conversion
- Expand refueling infrastructures
- Support regulated fleets
- Create new jobs and commercial opportunities
- Advance clean air objectives
- Increase public awareness
- Provide greater fuel choices
- Develop "Clean Corridors"
- Comply with legislation/regulations

Shreveport Clean Cities Establishes CNG Infrastructure in 2005 |
 |
 |
 |
During the first quarter of 2005, the Shreveport Regional Airport
hosted a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) demonstration project featuring a CNG fueling system
furnished by Fuelmaker and the CNG-powered Honda Civic GX, furnished by
Honda. City fleet managers and other local fleet managers were invited
to try out the vehicle and see the operation.
The City has partnered with EPA for the possible purchase of a
permanent CNG fueling unit to be located at the Airport, and the Airport
is currently considering the purchase of CNG vehicles for use in its
fleet. |

The City of Shreveport purchased the state's first hybrid electric bus
in 2005. Local artists painted the bus with conservation/air quality
themes, and the bus was placed into service last June. These pictures
were taken at the press conference announcing the arrival of the bus.
The purchase of the bus was made possible largely through funds
received through the EPA's Supplemental Environmental Project ("SEP")
program. |
