A select group of design students from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette has found its way to Washington D.C. this week, along with its beautifully-built solar house that is being showcased in the 2009 Solar Decathlon worldwide competition.
BeauSoleil, as it is aptly named, was judged yesterday and placed first for ‘market viability’ among the 20 international collegiate teams competing in the event being held at the National Mall and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy.
The ULL project began early in the year with participation and funding from the state DNR Energy Office. As part of the home’s features, materials have been used to help protect against the forces of hurricanes.
The student designers hail from several states and countries and are geared up and ready for the exciting challenge - competing for the top prize of “Most Attractive and Energy Efficient Home” as the judging continues throughout the week. On Sunday, the students invited the public to view their homes, hosting thousands of people and spectators wanting to learn more and to apply solar and energy-savings techniques in their own homes.
By Friday, the teams will learn the results - an engineering top prize and the overall winner will be selected.
But also this week, Louisiana supporters, family and friends, can be a part of the event and have a vote in the competition for “People’s Choice” award.
Join the DNR Energy Office staff, who have already texted their vote for BeauSoleil. Send your vote for House76 to number 99503.
