The next big saltwater fishing contest for the Teche Area’s many speckled trout and redfish anglers is the Sixth Annual Lydia Cancer Association August Angler’s Addiction Fishing Tournament at Cypremort Point.
You won’t want to miss it because it’s a fundraising event for a very good cause, a good group of men and women who have been dedicated to raising money for a decade for people in the area who need financial assistance for cancer victims. The organization, which provides assistance 60-70 cancer patients each month, is manned by more than 1,000 volunteers.
One of the several fundraisers also has been one its most popular events, especially among the many outdoorsmen in the area. There is a speckled trout division, a “slot redfish” (between 16 inches and 27 inches long) division and a kids division (for the largest drum and largest croaker).
The August Angler’s Addiction Fishing Tournament is scheduled to be held Aug. 10, with registration starting at 5 a.m. Under the pavilion at Quintana Canal Boat Landing, Cypremort Point. Weigh-in starts at 1 p.m. and ends at 4 p.m., according to tournament director Matt Landry.
Entry fee is $100 per boat. The minumum payout is $500 for first in the speckled trout and redfish divisions; $300 for second in both divisions; $200 for third in both divisions, and a $50 gift certificate for fourth in both divisions. Also, there is an optional Calcutta, $5 per person, with a 50 percent payback.
First-, second- and third-place in the kids division’s largest drum and largest croaker categories are $75, $45 and $30, respectively.
Landry and his brother Ronald Landry are seeking sponsors and donations for the August Angler’s Addiction Fishing Tournament. They appreciate any help from the community, which has been so generous in the past.
Sponsorships are Event, $1,000; Platinum ($800-$999); Gold ($400-$799) and Silver ($100-$399).
For more information about the tournament or to arrange a sponsorship or donation, call 519-3947 or 519-3131.

This is the latest I can remember the Atchafalaya Basin getting to a bona fide fishable level since January 1976, the year I moved here from Missouri.
Finally, the Atchafalaya River will dip below 10.0 feet at Butte La Rose. It has been unseasonably high for several months.
The Atchafalaya River’s BLR stage was 11.4 as of Saturday. Unfortunately, it’s going to drop like a rock and get down to 7.5 on Thursday, according to the forecast from the National Weather Service.
Hopefully, the fast fall won’t bring too much bad water out of the woods too quickly.
