Shrimpers described good catch but low prices on Monday's inshore brown shrimp season opening, The Houma Courier reported.

Shrimpers told the Courier that shrimp was plentiful, about 80 to 100 shrimp per pounds, but price was lower than past years.

Every year, the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission seeks to open the inshore shrimp seasons when Wildlife and Fisheries personnel project a minimum of 50 percent of the inshore brown-shrimp population will reach 100-count per pound or larger.

Wildlife and Fisheries projected earlier this month that all the basins' brown shrimp would reach that size by the season opening Monday, except for the Mermentau, Calcsieu and Sabine basins area, where shrimp were projected to hit that mark by May 27.

The brown shrimp season often lasts until sometime in July, when Wildlife and Fisheries typically decides to close waters to protect young white shrimp from harvest, allowing them to grow to marketable sizes for the fall season. White shrimp mainly are harvested in August, September and October.
